Aims of the course:
This course aims to guide students to acquire a variety of language skills through the analysis of fictional and non fiction texts, helping foster their development as an articulate and empathetic member of society.

What we study 

Students will be taught to:

  • read fluently and write effectively
  • demonstrate a confident control of standard English
  • be able to write grammatically correct sentences
  • deploy figurative language and analytical skills

Students will:

  • read a wide range of texts, fluently and with good understanding
  • read critically, and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve their own writing
  • write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
  • use grammar correctly and punctuate, and spell accurately
  • acquire and apply a wide vocabulary
  • use and understand grammatical terminology
  • listen to and understand spoken language, and use spoken Standard English effectively, specified to purpose

The Spoken Language endorsement will be reported on as part of the qualification, in addition to the written exam grade.

Year 10 Entry
The top two sets on each side of the year will sit their English Language GCSE paper at the end of Year 10. This will allow them to focus solely on English Literature in Year 11.

Post-16 Choices
The course prepares students to continue with English Language and Literature, or English Literature at A-Level at Oxted. It is also a valuable preparation for other courses with a high written content.
