Dance

Specific Course Entry Requirements

Dance experience equivalent to grade 5 with an associated Dance board

Examination Levels Offered

This course is linear, and all assessment will be taken in Year 13

Dance is a powerful, unique form of communication and social interaction that can change the way students feel, think and act. It brings together intellect, feelings and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development through movement. This course reflects on both historical and current dance practices, making it more relevant for today’s student and inspires a lifelong passion and appreciation for dance.

This A-level reflects both historical and current dance practices, making it more relevant, and inspires a lifelong passion and appreciation for dance. The course recognises the role of dance in young people’s lives and students will be able to study a range of dance styles. Creativity is a key part of dance encourages students to develop their capacity in a creative way, alongside transferable skills such as team working, communication and problem solving. There are exciting sources for choreography, including social, cultural and historical starting points and there are broad our areas of study covering a range of dance in history and society.  Students can perform and choreograph in a style of their choice for the group work, providing it meets the assessment criteria.

A-Level

Component 1: Performance and Choreography

  • Solo performance linked to a specific practitioner within an area of study
  • Performance in a quartet
  • Group choreography

How it is assessed: Practical exam, 80 marks - 50% of A-level

Component 2: Critical Engagement

Knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of a compulsory set work and its location within a corresponding area of study. 

Section A: short answer questions (25 marks) and one essay question (25 marks) on the compulsory set work/area of study. Knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of one optional set work and its location within a corresponding area of study 

Section B: two essay questions on the second set work/area of study (25 marks for each essay) 

How it is assessed: Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes, 100 marks - 50% of A-level
