Technology

Why we study Technology
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computing and Art.  Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Our Aims

Food Preparation and Nutrition: equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to feed themselves and others better. Students develop practical cookery skills and techniques as they explore the underlying principles of food science, nutrition, food traditions and food safety.

Resistant Materials: hand’s on and creative projects which will engage and stimulate students to learn the fundamentals of a jewellery making, linking to silversmiths in the industry. The clock project is a well-known RM project that gives students an insight into products with mechanisms included. It will also ensure students understand how to focus on the process of designing for a Target Market and key manufacturing skills used in industry.

Graphic Design: drawing, problem solving, specific computer skills such as Photoshop and sketch up which are important and useful life skills. The use of researching other artists not only helps them with looking into things that already exist and analysing them it pushes their creativity to design their own things. Knowledge of different careers and creative jobs. Presentation skills are also developed which are useful throughout school life and beyond.

Textiles: develops creativity in the students and encourages resilience when things do not always go to plan. It brings problem solving abilities out of the students. They will be working with peers on the sewing machine. Research is vital to majority of subjects at Key Stage 4 so will help them be resourceful. It is vital that our students can develop a passion for the more creative subjects and all of the many opportunities it can give them. Textiles will allow them to develop their more creative sides and if they have a passion for interior, fashion, sports, theatre and technical based design they will be able to use this as a spring board for following these varied career paths in the future.
